Research and Evaluation
Ongoing scientific evaluation and monitoring of Alberta NAWMP programs provides important information that allows Partners to change or refine planning and implementation priorities.
Environment Canada (EC), Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) assume a lead role in scientific evaluation of Alberta NAWMP programs.
- EC and SRD lead annual waterfowl population monitoring with support from DUC. EC and SRD also lead population monitoring of other bird groups and species at risk.
- EC, periodically supported by DUC, conducts wetland habitat monitoring to assess trends and inform NAWMP planners of changes in landscape conditions separate from AB NAWMP accomplishments.
- Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) supports research through its Technical Assistance grants.
- Alberta Environment (AENV), SRD and Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) conduct social research relating to conservation support and motivations.
- Various wetland-based directed studies are undertaken by EC, SRD, and DUC, frequently with funding support from the Alberta NAWMP Science Fund.
The Science Fund, directed by the Partners and broader scientific committee, supports a variety of wetland related studies which span agricultural, water management and ecological studies. Learn more about the Science Fund >>
